Ziru Chen

Ziru Chen is a DPhil candidate in Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford, where she holds a full Oxford-Kaifeng Scholarship, alongside various other grants. Her doctoral research, titled 'The Sensory Aesthetic of Contemporary East Asian Art Cinema', examines how key filmmakers in the region develop a distinct millennial film aesthetic centred on the human sensorium. Ziru’s broader research interests include the politics of relational aesthetics and the role of computer-generated images in shaping genre conventions. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture and Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media.

DPhil topic

Ziru’s doctoral research examines how contemporary East Asian filmmakers respond to digital media landscapes, focusing on their innovative approaches to narrative and sensory aesthetics.
