Research Interests:

Mamtimyn Sunuodula’s research interests lie in the intersection and interaction of language, identity and power in multilingual contexts. Drawing on ethnographic and historical data, his research explores the ways in which language practices form part of the fundamental set of actions through which ethnic and social identities are performatively enacted and social relations are negotiated. Mamtimyn Sunuodula is particularly interested in the ways in which disadvantaged minority linguistic groups shift the balance of symbolic power in their favour through the acquisition of ‘high value’ international/foreign languages and challenge the linguistic dominance and the dominant group’s precarious position in its claim to linguistic authenticity and authority.

  • ‘From China to Oxford: 400 years of cultural journey’ exhibition project (planned for launch in the summer of 2022)
